Introduction to the field of counseling with a focus on skills and competencies needed as a mental health practitioner. Foundations of counseling including counseling theories, ethical considerations, prevention and intervention topics, and multicultural counseling practices. Prerequisites: None.
Current theories and research on culture, race and ethnicity, gender and other aspects of cultural diversity in a multicultural society through the lens of counseling. Focus on personal perspectives, will explore themes, theories, topics and research related to power, privilege and oppression in the United States as applied to counseling discipline. Introduces the theory and practice of human communication. Surveys communication topics related to interpersonal, small group, and public communication. Prerequisites: None.
COM1100 Theory and practice of communication skills which affect day-to-day interactions with other persons. Topics may include using verbal and nonverbal symbols, interactive listening, resolving interpersonal conflict, developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships. COM1110 Designed to enhance the student's ability to present public speeches confidently and competently. Also designed to improve information literacy and critical thinking skills.

COM2271 Diverse cultural contexts are explored through basic concepts, principles, and theories of intercultural communication. Discovering effective interaction and appropriate communication in a global community is emphasized. Prerequisites: None.
Emphasis on rhetoric and composition with a focus on expository writing and understanding writing as a process. Establishing effective college-level writing strategies through four or more writing projects comprising at least 3,000 words in total.
